About Qamishli

Al-Qamishli is a city located in northeast Syria. It is also the center of the Al-Qamishli region, bordering Turkey and in close proximity to the Iraqi border. Al-Qamishli is the 10th most populated city in Syria; according to the 2004 census the city had a population of 185 thousand. The city is home to a mix of ethnic groups, the greatest portion being Kurds and Arabs.

The city’s economy is based on agriculture, tourism, shopping, and petroleum. Al-Qamishli cuisine features a lot of Kurdish and Arabian cuisine with kebab restaurants in every part of the city. In addition to the popularity of meat dishes and doughy desserts, there are also Western-style restaurants available in the city. The northern regions of the city experience the cold and snowy winters of a continental climate and the southern region of the city experiences hot and dry summers.

Located in a steppe region with forest vegetation, the city features poplar, willow, and oak trees in the mountains region in the north and date palm trees and palm trees in the south.
